GRANBURY (CBSDFW.COM) – Controversy is brewing over two books in a Hood County library. Some parents are demanding that the books — which teach about the LGBT community — be banned.

Parent after parent spoke about this issue Tuesday morning at the Hood County Commissioners Court.

The two children’s books at the center of this debate are “My Princess Boy” by Cheryl Kilodavis and “This Day in June” by Gayle E. Pitman, both of which address LGBT issues. One of the books has already been moved to a different section of the library, but some parents maintain that they should be banned altogether.

A mother told city leaders that she has no problem with the two books being available at the library, but they should be displayed in a separate area. “I’ve been forced into this discussion because my 4-year-old picked up one of the books in question from a prominent carousel and held it up to me,” she explained. “We’ve now had to have conversations which I would have preferred to have in a few years.”

However, another woman was met with applause when she said, “If you don’t want your children to read these books, don’t check them out!”

This controversy comes right on the heels of Hood County coming under fire for refusing to give out same-sex marriage licenses. After several days, the county did decide to go ahead and issues the licenses. It is not clear if the Hood County Commissioner Court will vote Tuesday on the book issue.
