HOOD COUNTY (CBS11) – The owner of an 8-month-old zebra on the loose in Granbury, has come forward. The foal was spotted gallivanting south of Granbury off Highway 144 near Comanche Peak just before 3:00 p.m.
“Our dogs were outside and our neighbor Scott, next door, called us and said ‘you need to come get the dogs–they’re harassing a zebra that’s in our yard,’ said homeowner Whitni Graves.
Sure enough, When Graves went out to find her dogs, there was a zebra on her neighbor’s property. The black and white beauty decided to hop the fence and stick around Graves 5 acre property instead.
“Well, we fed him. He probably liked that,” Graves joked.
For hours, Graves’ toddler and her neighbor’s son delighted in watching the zebra graze. The children dubbed the zebra spotting, “a zebra party.”
All the while, the Hood County Sheriff’s Office worked to locate the animal’s owner.
They called the nearby Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose; it wasn’t missing any zebras.
They called local ranches and checked county records. For hours, the zebra went unclaimed. Then David Martin and his grandson, pulled up to the Graves’ property.
“We had our neighbors in Burleson call and say, “I heard you zebra is out. We heard about it from the news,’ Martin explained.
The Zebra’s name is Zulu. He was a Christmas present for Martin. Zulu moved into his new home on the Martin’s 100 acre property a couple of days ago. They live less than a mile away from the Graves’ home.
My son bought the zebra for a Christmas present. So that’s how we ended up with a zebra,” Martin explained.
His grandson Ryan thought the Zebra may have escaped via an open gate on the property.
“We literally just got it yesterday. We left one of our gates open,” Ryan Martin said.
They decided to let Zulu remain on the Graves property overnight as they planned out the best way to get him home.
